2020 Delhi EV policy

Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal last Friday launched 'Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy' under which his government will waive registration fee and road tax, and provide incentive of up to Rs 1.5 lakh for new cars in the national capital.

As per CM Kejriwal, the policy aims to boost the economy, create jobs and reduce pollution level. Moreover, it aims to increase the electric vehicles portion to 25 per cent by 2024, which is currently just 0.29 per cent in the city.

The scheme proposes waiver on registration fee and road tax for electric vehicles. Incentives for the industry will be scrapped though. Moreover, EV buyers can avail low-interest loan. The Delhi govt also hopes that it will create more jobs in the national capital.

Under the Delhi Electric Vehicle Policy, buyers will get quite a hefty discount on electric vehicles. As reported, there's up to Rs 30,000 subsidy provisioned under the policy for electric two-wheelers while electric car buyers will get subsidy of up to Rs 1.5 lakh. On auto-rickshaw and freight vehicles, up to Rs 30,000 is being proposed under the policy.

EV makers have welcomed the decision. According to the Society of Manufacturers of Electric Vehicles (SMEV), this policy will provide more push to the existing EV architecture than the current FAME II scheme by the Centre. "The customers who were unable to get subsidy under the central government's scheme due to certain restrictive norms, now have a chance to avail subsidy under this scheme," SMEV Director General Sohinder Gill said in a statement.
